The 2000 Defence White Paper stated the Australian Defence Force would replace the Royal Australian Navy's FFGs with a class of three air-defence capable ships, the new Air Warfare Destroyers (AWD). In May 2005, ASC was chosen by the Federal Government as shipbuilder for the AWD Program, with the Defence Capability Plan 2003 calling for the new class to begin entering service in 2013.
