Our new $35 million submarine support facility at the
Australian Marine Complex (AMC) is one of Australia's most modern, cutting-edge naval shipyards.
Known as ASC West, it was
officially opened on 30 April 2008 by Western Australian Minister for Energy, Resources, Industry and Enterprise
Francis Logan, and Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Procurement
Greg Combet.
It features accommodation for 185 ASC employees and dedicated facilities for boat crews and
Royal Australian Navy personnel, and represents the amalgamation of our three previous service facilities into one consolidated state-of-the-art submarine support facility.
Location
Our new facility at the AMC is located at Henderson, 35km south-west of Perth's CBD.
Facility Development
ASC West is a significant investment in our future in the State of Western Australia.
Key features include:
- Modern office accommodation (3,600 metres) and dedicated facilities for boat crews and RAN personnel;
- a large maintenance hall (2,600 square metres) for undercover submarine work; and
- use of the Western Australian Government-funded floating dock, transfer facility and access to the CUF's eastern wharf extensions.
ASC will benefit from the Western Australian Government's $174 million commitment to additional infrastructure, including a floating dock, as part of the Common User Facility (CUF).
The CUF will also incorporate land transfer capability enabling us to move submarines from the wharf to the new facility.
We are scheduled to undertake our first submarine maintenance docking at the AMC in late 2009.
