HMAS
Collins, widely regarded as one of the best conventional submarines in the world, was announced today as the inaugural winner of the
Royal Australian Navy’s prestigious new award – the Platypus Cup.
Sponsored by submarine builder, designer and maintainer ASC Pty Ltd, the Platypus Cup was awarded to HMAS Collins in recognition of the effort and dedication of the submarine crew’s rigorous onboard training to ensure the safe and effective operation of the vessel.
ASC Managing Director
Greg Tunny presented the Platypus Cup to the Commanding Officer of HMAS
Collins, Commander Glen Miles, at a ceremony also attended by Commander of the Australian Navy Submarine Group, Commodore Rick Shalders.
“Training is such a vital element towards the
Collins Class submarines operating at their maximum capability, and I congratulate the crew of HMAS
Collins for their commitment to submarine training,” said Mr Tunny.
“ASC is delighted to sponsor the Platypus Cup, which we hope will become an award of note for the Navy and their submarines.”
The name ‘Platypus Cup’ reflects the
history of the original submarine depot ship HMAS
Platypus and, later, the submarine base (also known as HMAS
Platypus) in Sydney; the first home of submarine training in Australia.
The award will be presented annually to the Collins Class submarine demonstrating the best fleet, submarine and individual training performance for the preceding 12 months.
