ASC targets future young skills

2 July 2007

Young people in Adelaide’s southern suburbs today received a taste of the highly specialised trade skills needed by one of Australia’s leading defence organisations.

Osborne-based ASC, shipbuilder for the Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Program and maintainer of the Collins Class submarines, will need hundreds of tradespeople to work on both projects.

Five electricians from ASC visited the Australian Technical College – Adelaide South at Christie Downs today to give demonstrations of the unique trade work they do.

Electrical Coordinator Mr Alan Masson said the visit was a trial for raising awareness among Adelaide’s young people about the company’s future employment opportunies.

“The aim of this trial program is to raise awareness among young people that if they are considering a trade career, then ASC represents a viable opportunity that is different to just about any other type of tradework that’s available,” he said.

“As a tradesperson with ASC, you get to work on high-tech, highly specialised machinery and equipment that you just won’t find anywhere else in Australia.

“We have two big, long-term projects on our books – the Air Warfare Destroyers and the Collins Class submarines – and we will need a lot of tradespeople once we begin to construct the AWDs in 2009.

“It’s vital for us that we have the right staff with the right skills – so we are going out to the community now to show what we’re about, and get young people thinking about us.”

ASC ELECTRICAL SKILLS DEMONSTRATION:
  • ASC will need hundreds of tradespeople for its ongoing work with the Air Warfare Destroyers and Collins Class submarines, beginning in 2009 with the construction of AWDs.
  • Today’s demonstration at the Australian Technical College – Adelaide South was an awareness-raising exercise for young people to consider a trade career with ASC.  The company is not recruiting for trade positions now.
