ASC leads Adelaide 'brain gain'

26 October 2007

More than 50 of the best naval engineers and designers from around the world have joined ASC in the last two years in a major Adelaide ‘brain gain’.

The recent arrivals will be honoured with a Civic Reception hosted by Lord Mayor Michael Harbison at the Adelaide Town Hall from 6pm tonight (Friday).

ASC is headquartered at Osborne, South Australia.  It is the country’s only submarine designer/builder/maintainer and is also shipbuilder for the Air Warfare Destroyer Program.

ASC Deputy Chief Executive Officer Ross Milton says the complex engineering required for the company’s submarine and shipbuilding programs means it requires staff from across Australia and the world.

“We are a world-class company performing world-class work, and in addition to the highly-skilled Adelaide-based people we recruit, are constantly on the look-out for world-class employees from interstate or overseas,” Mr Milton says.

“Often these people are working in established submarine and shipbuilding programs and have the high-end skills that can be hard to find locally.

“This also means they are highly sought after as prospective employees by many companies throughout the world, and we find that the city of Adelaide is often a major factor in their decision to join us.

“They love the challenging work that we offer, but also the way of life, weather, cost of living and the other benefits that living in Adelaide brings.

“We are delighted and honoured that the Lord Mayor has provided a Civic Reception to recognise the contribution our staff from interstate and overseas make not only to ASC, but the city of Adelaide itself.”
