HMAS Rankin wins Platypus Cup

14 December 2007

The challenge of operating a world-renowned Collins Class submarine such as 2007 Platypus Cup winner HMAS Rankin is reflected in the training its crew must undergo.

Before they even set foot on their vessel the crew must complete up to nine months of training; once onboard, obtain their basic seagoing qualification known as their ‘Dolphins’ over another six months, and then take part in ongoing training and education.

It represents a massive commitment of dedication and effort from the crew – a commitment now recognised by the Royal Australian Navy award, the Platypus Cup.

Sponsored by Australia’s submarine company ASC, it is awarded to the Collins Class submarine whose crew best demonstrates the rigorous training needed to ensure the safe and effective operation of the vessel.

HMAS Rankin Commanding Officer Phil Stanford was presented with the Platypus Cup at the Submarine Force Element Group’s year-ending Divisions Parade at HMAS Stirling today.

ASC Managing Director Greg Tunny said the Platypus Cup was well on its way to becoming an award of distinction within the Navy and in particular its submarine force.

“We are very proud to sponsor this award – we know through our provision of services at the Navy’s Submarine Training School at HMAS Stirling just how rigorous the training is for submarine crews.  So to win this award is indeed an outstanding achievement.

“I commend the crew of HMAS Rankin for their effort and dedication in undergoing the training which keeps our country’s submarines operating safely and effectively.”

The award is presented annually to the Collins Class submarine demonstrating the best fleet, submarine and individual training performance for the preceding 12 months. HMAS Collins won the inaugural award in 2006.

The name ‘Platypus Cup’ reflects the history of the original submarine depot ship HMAS Platypus and, later, the old submarine base (also known as HMAS Platypus) in Sydney; the first home of submarine training in Australia.
