Project management skills receive a boost

31 January 2008

A new postgraduate qualification to be offered from March by leading naval shipbuilder ASC will provide a welcome skills boost for the local defence industry.

Up to 25 students will undertake the first components in the Master of Project Management program, to be delivered through the University of South Australia

The courses, funded by the Defence Materiel Organisation’s Skilling Australia’s Defence Industry (SADI) program, will be delivered through the South Australian Government’s new Maritime Skills Centre; part of the Techport Australia precinct at Osborne.

Students – predominantly ASC staff from its submarine and destroyer programs – will receive a strong theoretical framework in which to develop their project management skills.  First-year subjects include risk management, procurement and quality management.

ASC Managing Director Greg Tunny said ASC’s involvement in two major defence projects –providing through-life support for the Collins Class submarines and as shipbuilder in the Air Warfare Destroyer Program – meant its staff needed to have the highest level of project management skills possible.

“These are large-scale, complex programs that will last for many years, so having the best project managers is essential to their success,” Mr Tunny said.

“At ASC we are committed to providing our staff with the right training and professional development opportunities that not only boosts the professional capabilities of our people, but also our overall capability as a company.

“The new Project Management program shows that we are delivering on this commitment.”

ASC now delivers three SADI-funded postgraduate qualifications: in addition to the Master of Project Management, it offers the Master of Military Systems Integration (in association with Saab and BAE Systems) delivered through the University of South Australia, and the Master of Marine Engineering delivered through the University of Adelaide.
