ASC helps master defence skills upgrade

28 August 2006

ASC Pty Ltd has joined forces with the University of South Australia (UniSA) and other defence companies for a new course which will give local defence skills a much-needed boost.

The Master of Military Systems Integration (MSI) is a three-year postgraduate engineering qualification aimed to address specific skill shortages in the defence industry. It has been funded by the Defence Materiel Organisation’s Skilling Australia’s Defence Industry initiative.

The MSI curriculum is jointly designed and delivered by ASC, BAE Systems and Saab Systems in collaboration with UniSA.
ASC, Saab and BAE Systems are providing the first intake of MSI students in 2006, with the intention to open the program to other industry participants from 2007/08.

ASC Managing Director Greg Tunny said the company is delighted to be taking part in such an important innovation.
“ASC already has the biggest repository of high-end naval skills and technical specialists in the nation – but we want to do more,” Mr Tunny said.

“We have been awarded the role of shipbuilder for the Air Warfare Destroyer Program.  We have just started a 25 year, multi-billion dollar contract to maintain and upgrade the Collins Class submarines.

“These are both major commitments.  They involve the integration of complex and high-tech systems, and we want our Design and Engineering team to be equipped with the most up-to-date skills and knowledge available to handle these challenges.

“We are looking forward to working with BAE Systems, Saab Systems and UniSA boost the capabilities of the local defence industry.”
