ASC asks industry to step up for defence programs

19 October 2006

With South Australia’s manufacturing sector feeling the pinch, ASC Pty Ltd is urging industry to get on board major defence programs.

At an industry function at the National Wine Centre tonight, ASC – builder and maintainer of the Collins Class submarines and shipbuilder for the Air Warfare Destroyer Program – has asked industry to help build Australia’s naval defence capability.

“Building the Collins Class submarines provided unprecedented opportunities for over 1,400 suppliers and industry partners, with many of those companies going on to thrive in Australia’s defence industry,” said Mr John Gallacher, Chief Executive Officer of ASC Shipbuilding.

“As we move closer towards the challenging task of constructing three complex air warfare destroyers, ASC is reaching out to industry and reaffirming its commitment to collaboration on major defence programs.”

In addition to building three air warfare destroyers, ASC is responsible for the ongoing design enhancements, maintenance and support of the Collins Class submarines as part of a 25 year, multi-billion Through-Life Support contract.

“Across both of ASC’s major defence programs, the supply chain is a pivotal part of the company being able to deliver on its commitments on time and on budget,” said Mr Gallacher.

“As we showed with the Collins Class program – industry partnership and collaboration is always the best way, and ASC’s way.”
