In May 2005, the Australian Government selected ASC as the shipbuilder for Australia's Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) Program.
The construction of the Navantia-designed AWDs will be one of the most significant shipbuilding projects undertaken in Australia and will provide enormous opportunities for Australia's shipbuilding industry with important flow-on benefits for key subcontractors throughout the country.
AWDs are highly technical, complex and formidable naval ships. Their role is one of control: controlling environments above, around and below them with the latest weapons, communications and systems technology.
Their missions will involve providing air defence for accompanying ships, land forces, infrastructure in nearby coastal areas and self-protection against attacking missiles and aircraft.
Other missions will include law enforcement operations, defence aid to the civil community, collection of environmental data, assisted evacuations and diplomatic roles.
