The construction of the sixth and final submarine, HMAS
Rankin, in March 2003 did not signify the end of ASC's involvement with the Collins Class submarines.
Through-Life SupportOn 8 December 2003, we signed a multi-billion Through-Life Support (TLS) contract with Defence Materiel Organisation for the ongoing design enhancements, maintenance and support of the submarines until the end of their operational lives.
The initial duration of the agreement is for 15 years, with the option to extend it for a further 10 years.
The contract reaffirms our reputation as Australia's pre-eminent centre for submarine construction, modification, repair and maintenance, and is a significant investment in Australian technology and intellectual capital.
Submarine Maintenance
The majority of submarine maintenance work is undertaken at our Osborne, South Australia, facility on full-cycle dockings (refits). The remainder is spent on submarine maintenance activities carried out primarily in Western Australia, where the submarines are based.
Our world-class team of designers and engineers are constantly developing and implementing upgrades which ensure the Collins Class submarines remain at the cutting edge of submarine technology.
Some of our design enhancements include:
- replacement combat system;
- heavyweight torpedoes;
- special forces' modifications; and
- enhanced communications capabilities.
