Australia’s submarine company, ASC, has expanded its partnership with veteran-led Sayres Australia to support development of requirements and specialised training programs aimed at enhancing the capability and resilience of the nation’s submarine workforce.
Currently supporting ASC with the design and development of Navy training courses associated with the Collins Class Submarine Life of Type Extension, the $2 million contract expansion will see Sayres Australia assist with design and development of tailored training to ASC employees sustaining the Collins Class fleet, and the growing workforce supporting the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine sustainment program.
Training programs will be developed over the next three years and will focus on technical proficiency and operational readiness.
Chief People and Workforce Development Officer Jo Horne said the collaboration reflects ASC’s commitment to investing in local expertise and supporting veteran employment.
“Partnering with Sayres Australia brings deep Defence expertise into our workforce while supporting veterans in meaningful civilian careers,” Ms Horne said.
“Their proven training capability makes them an ideal collaborator as we expand our submarine sustainment and future capability.”
Three quarters of Sayres Australia’s workforce are veterans and veterans’ family members, bringing valuable operational insight and Defence training experience to the partnership.
Sayres Australia Chief Executive Craig Powell welcomed the opportunity to deepen the company’s engagement with ASC.
“We’re proud to continue and expand our support to ASC in developing high-impact training aligned with Australia’s Defence objectives, in what is an exciting milestone for Sayres Australia” Mr Powell said.
“Our team understands the demands of Defence environments and is committed to equipping ASC personnel with the skills to excel in support of this important national endeavour.”
ASC’s partnership with Sayres Australia underscores ASC’s ongoing commitment to building a skilled, sovereign Defence workforce, while fostering innovation and inclusion through collaboration with veteran-led Australian businesses.
Editor’s notes:
ASC has proudly served as Australia’s submarine builder and sustainer for 40 years. ASC built Australia’s Collins Class submarines and now maintains and upgrades them, while providing in-operation service and support.
In March 2024, ASC was selected as the Australian Government’s Sovereign Submarine Partner to sustain and, together with BAE Systems, jointly build conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines at Osborne, known as SSN AUKUS.
Sayres Australia commenced business in 2019 and is a veteran owned and led professional services company with expertise in Defence training design and delivery. Sayres Australia has been contracted to provide training development support to ASC as part of the Collins Class Submarine LOTE project since 2023 and has also provided like support to a range of Defence Primes and the ADF directly across a broad spectrum of capabilities.
