From a deep fascination with the human body and nuclear medicine, Alessandra’s STEM journey is one of passion, curiosity and innovation.
Alessandra’s STEM career began in nuclear medicine, driven by a love for understanding how the human body works and how modern medicine can treat diseases.
“Combining these interests led me to pursue a degree in nuclear medicine, where I gained a deep appreciation for how radiation can be used to save lives,” says Alessandra.
“I chose a career in STEM because my favourite subjects in school were physics and maths. But STEM is so much more than calculating numbers. It’s about problem- solving, critical thinking and innovation.
“It’s also about being able to collaborate with others who share the same curiosity and passion.”
After years of contributing to the medical field, Alessandra sought out new challenges and growth. That led her to the submarine industry where she took on the role of ASC’s Radiological Controls Manager.
Here she’s responsible for creating and overseeing policies, plans and procedures that protect ASC’s workers, the public and the environment. Alessandra’s work is a delicate balancing act of applying scientific principles safely and responsibly in an industrial setting.
Alessandra also takes the time to educate others and raise awareness about radiological safety.
“Helping people understand what radiation is, how it works, and how we can use it safely, is one of my favourite parts of my role,” says Alessandra.
“I’m incredibly proud of my journey so far, and days like International Women in Science Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the importance of diversity in STEM.
“Women in STEM should never be afraid to advocate for themselves, seek out mentors, and challenge the status quo.
“If I could speak to my younger self, I’d say: commit to finding what you truly enjoy, and trust that you’ll find your way. It’s okay to take time to explore your passions through different roles, training opportunities, or even volunteering. Every experience shapes your path.
“Women belong in STEM. Diversity drives innovation, and we’re proving that every day!”
Alessandra is making her mark in STEM at ASC, alongside a community that’s just as passionate about increasing women’s representation in roles across science, technology, engineering and maths.
At ASC, we’re committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. Proudly recognised as an endorsed “Employer of choice for women” by WORK180, we’re dedicated to prioritising inclusion initiatives that empower women in the workplace.
Diversity isn’t just a buzzword at ASC – it’s an active commitment. From supporting women in STEM to creating opportunities for growth and leadership, we’re all about ensuring everyone has a seat at the table.
Let’s celebrate Alessandra and all the incredible women who are breaking barriers and pushing the boundaries of STEM!
