Engineering submarine stealth: a career in STEM

Home > Media and Publications > ASC Stories > Engineering submarine stealth: a career in STEM

This International Women and Girls in Science Day we’re celebrating the talented women helping drive innovation across STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) at ASC. One of those women is Alyssa, a Lead Signatures Engineer whose work plays a critical role in sustaining the stealth of Australia’s Collins Class submarines.

We sat down with Alyssa to talk about her career journey, what signatures engineering really involves, and why she believes STEM offers endless possibilities for curious minds.

Alyssa, how did your journey at ASC begin, and what led you to your current role?

“I stared at ASC in the Planning department while I was studying a Bachelor of Science (Physics and Maths). As my degree progressed, I realised how much I enjoyed working at ASC but also wanted to apply what I was learning at university more directly to my role.

“So, I transferred into the Signatures Engineering department, where I’m now working as a Lead Signatures Engineer. I absolutely love it.  Alongside work, I’m also studying a Master of Engineering (Mechanical), which I’m hoping to complete this year.”

Your role seems to bring together many different STEM disciplines. Is that what attracted you to signatures engineering?

“I think signatures engineering is a great example of just how broad a STEM career can be. It doesn’t sit within one stream of engineering, but instead brings together concepts from physics, maths, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering.”

For those who may not be familiar with the field, what does signatures engineering involve?

“As a Signatures Engineer, I work to maintain and improve the stealth of the Collins Class submarines – essentially, keeping them as quiet as possible. A submarine’s greatest strength is its ability to operate and remain undetected, so stealth is absolutely critical.

“Signatures engineering is diverse, exciting, and challenging. One day I might be in the office deriving mathematical equations, and the next I could be onboard a submarine taking measurements! I love the balance between theory and experimentation, and there are endless opportunities to learn.”

What has been a standout moment for you, seeing your work applied in a real-world setting?

“A career highlight for me was being fortunate enough to participate in a submarine sea trial. Sleeping onboard a live, fully crewed submarine was such a surreal experience – and it taught me so much that I never would have learned without being there.”

Can you share one of your favourite submarine facts you’ve learned along the way?

“Whilst there have been significant technological advancements in the past century, the first combat ‘submarine’ actually dates back to the 1770s and was referred to as ‘the Turtle!”

How interesting! Did you always know you wanted to work with submarines?

“Not specifically in the submarine industry, but I’ve always had an interest in STEM subjects, particularly physics. One thing I didn’t realise while I was at school was just how many opportunities a STEM career could offer. I only discovered that later, once I had started my working career.”

What advice would you give to young girls who are choosing their school subjects now?

“My advice would be to keep an open mind! The world of STEM is huge, and it’s ok not to like parts of it – don’t let one subject or topic you dislike deter you entirely.

“There are endless pathways within STEM, and you can focus on the areas you’re most passionate about. A career in STEM, particularly in the defence industry, is incredibly rewarding and offers lifelong learning. There really are no boring days!”

We know there’s still work to be done to improve diversity in STEM. What are you hoping to see for the future of women in STEM?

“I can already see many positive changes for women in STEM. Each year, we’re seeing increased interest from girls in high school and university, and I hope that continues. Women in STEM bring diverse experiences and perspectives to the workplace, creating dynamic environments where innovation can thrive.”
