Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Zoe is embarking on a hands-on innovation journey through her university research project, collaborating with ASC and the University of South Australia.
Zoe’s research offers a promising solution for enhancing heat management in submarines, addressing the unique challenges posed by their confined and demanding underwater environment where efficient heat control is essential.
Her project investigates how the use of dimpled tubes influences heat transfer efficiency and alters the water flow patterns within these tubes, based on the geometry of the dimples. Although it’s a small design modification, this change has the potential to make a big impact.
“I started at ASC in the undergraduate internship program,” says Zoe.
“I’ve really appreciated the extensive support from my project supervisor, Kyle, and the wider members of the Science and Technology Group.
“There’s a great balance between challenging students to take ownership of their project and make technical decisions, while still providing a support network where they can tap into expert knowledge.”
Highlighting Zoe’s ambition and dedication to her studies, she was awarded a Playford Trust Honours Scholarship to support her financially during her final year of her honours degree at university.
“Receiving this scholarship has been a game-changer for me. I can spend more time on my research project because I don’t need to worry about financial pressures while I’m studying,” says Zoe.
“When I first started university, I hadn’t considered a career in the defence industry. But, I knew I wanted to work on large-scale projects where innovation is challenging, and my contributions could have a positive impact on the world, whether through technology like rockets, satellites or cars.
“Now that I’m at ASC, I realise that working on Australia’s submarines is a perfect fit for me.
“If you’re a university student contemplating your future careers, I strongly encourage you to explore the opportunities in the defence industry. This sector offers you flexibility and a diverse range of engineering disciplines, allowing you to align your career with your specific interests. I’ve witnessed this firsthand – the professionals around me all have varied levels of experience across different specialities.
“Once I finish uni, I hope to stay at ASC and join the graduate program. I’m not done with submarines just yet.”
Zoe’s research project is more than solving complex engineering challenges, it’s a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands-on industry experience, grow her professional network, and learn from the talented engineers at ASC.
