Some careers are just jobs – others are a calling

For Peter, a Royal Australian Navy veteran and a long-standing team member at ASC, his journey has been one of service, transformation and purpose.

The “build days”

Peter’s journey at ASC began during what many call the “build days” – the early years of the Collins Class submarines. Peter worked on outfitting the large complex
platforms which when integrated into the Hull sections comprised the interior systems and structure of the boats under construction at Osborne. If you think
of submarines as the ultimate system of systems, then platform integration connects all these systems together as a single operational platform.

“I was in the Royal Australian Navy for 11 years before joining ASC. I’ve always wanted a job with purpose, and I’ve been fortunate to make that a reality,” says Peter.

Peter’s background in defence made his transition to ASC feel natural – not just in the technical aspects of his work, but also in the culture of the team around him.  The discipline and sense of purpose he was familiar with in the defence force were mirrored in the work ethic of his colleagues.

“The pride ASC had in building Australia’s submarines was incredible,” Peter recalls.

“You could see it in everyone, no matter their role. There was just this aura of pride, and I still see that same spirit still exists at ASC today.”

As life outside of work evolved, so did his priorities. With a young family growing fast, Peter chose to take a pause from his career at ASC. The decision led him
to Sweden, where he embraced family life and spent more time with his wife’s side of the family.

Sustaining Collins – keeping the capability strong

After a decade immersed in Scandinavian life, Peter made the move back to Australia and rejoined ASC. Much had changed during his time away – the Collins Class submarines had evolved from brand-new submarines to active, operational units. With this shift, ASC’s focus transitioned to submarine sustainment, ensuring
the fleet remained mission-ready.

Peter’s new role was leading the planning of detailed work packs. These covered everything from preventative maintenance and defect repairs to critical system upgrades – essential work that ensured the submarines remained a robust and potent force for the Royal Australian Navy.

“When you’re working on a submarine, which operates in some of the harshest conditions imaginable, it’s absolutely critical that every task – no matter how small – is carried out to the highest standard,” Peter explains.

“There’s no room for error when it comes to the safety and performance of these boats.”

Digital transformation

“I was also part of ASC’s ‘Digital Transformation Program’ as a ‘super-user’ for a number of years,” says Peter.

“My role involved working closely with the program team to make sure the system changes were effective when put into practice.

“Introducing new technology into long established systems is never easy. We had to carefully consider how these changes would impact day-to-day operations and workflows that had been in place for a long time.

“Despite the complexity, the program gained momentum thanks to a committed network of ‘super-users’ from across the business.

“The team really pulled together. There was a strong sense of camaraderie. Delivering the new ERP solutions was a real achievement, and I’m incredibly proud to have been part of it.”

Extending the life of the Collins Class

Today, Peter finds himself in a role similar to the one he first held at ASC. He is now involved in the Collins Life of Type Extension (LOTE) program, a pivotal project
where ASC is set to replace key systems with new units, modernise selected systems, and conduct a range of hull assessments.

“I feel very lucky to be a part of LOTE, it’s incredibly important work,” says Peter.

“I’ve seen a lot during my time at ASC, through the ‘build days’, sustainment, digital transformation and now LOTE. Before I retire, I want to see the LOTE program fully embedded and running smoothly.”

Looking back on Peter’s 23-year career at ASC, it’s clear he’s seen ASC transition through several distinct phases – each with its own challenges, triumphs and milestones.

What has remained constant throughout? A culture of pride and an unwavering commitment to excellence, no matter the project.

ASC acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters on or near our operations in WA and SA. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
