In a recent article in The Australian, ASC Chief Capability Officer Danielle Bull explained why Western Australia has a lot to be excited about when it comes to the future of the state’s defence industry.
As someone who calls Perth home, I’m proud to see Western Australia stepping into a leading role in sustaining Australia’s future nuclear-powered submarine capability. With the first US Virginia-class submarines scheduled to arrive from as early as 2027 in support of Submarine Rotational Force West, they’re just around the corner. WA is preparing to support not only their ongoing sustainment but also the future SSN-AUKUS fleet. While South Australia leads the build of the SSN-AUKUS submarines, WA is firmly positioned as the sustainment hub, ensuring these boats remain mission-ready for decades to come.
At ASC, we’re building more than submarines. We’re building careers, communities, and a future-ready workforce. ASC is Australia’s only sovereign submarine builder and sustainer, with unmatched expertise developed over decades of delivering and supporting the Collins-class fleet. This legacy positions us uniquely to lead the nation’s transition to conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines under AUKUS and WA is central to our success. Our supply chain is expanding, our partnerships are deepening, and our recruitment drive is accelerating.
We’re seeing a surge in interest from talented individuals across WA – from school leavers to seasoned professionals – who want to be part of something with a deeper purpose. And we’re ready for them. ASC is investing in career pathways that are clear, supported, and future focused. Whether you’re starting out in engineering, transitioning from another industry, or returning to the workforce, there’s a place for you in our team.
One of the most exciting developments is our collaboration with ANSTO, Australia’s national nuclear science and technology organisation for over 70 years. This partnership is unlocking new opportunities in nuclear science and technology, offering WA talent a chance to upskill in areas that will be critical to our future submarine capability. It’s not just about technical training, it’s about building confidence, capability, and a culture of excellence.
Upskilling is at the heart of our strategy. We’re working closely with TAFEs, universities, industry partners and the Federal and State Governments to ensure our workforce is equipped for the challenges ahead. From advanced manufacturing to systems integration, the skills we’re developing here in WA are world-class – and they’re being recognised globally.
But this isn’t just a story about infrastructure and investment. It’s a story about people. I’ve met apprentices and graduates who’ve found their calling, engineers who’ve returned home to contribute, and suppliers who’ve grown their businesses through ASC’s programs. Their stories are at the heart of what AUKUS means for ordinary Australians.
WA’s contribution to AUKUS is not symbolic, it’s strategic. Our geography, our industry base, and our people make us indispensable. And as Chief Capability Officer, I’m proud to say that ASC is committed to ensuring WA remains at the forefront of Australia’s defence future.
If you’re looking for a career that matters, a team that supports you, and a mission that inspires you – look west. The future is being built right here in WA, and we’re just getting started.
